As a documentary photographer I am interested in capturing moments that tell of a time, share an emotion, or capture the essence of an experience. Many of my photos are of expressions, or places that may shortly be gone. I try to capture images that endure and cause the moment to endure. The instant may not be a significant one, but it will capture the character of a person, place, or experience.
I appreciate the ability of a camera to freeze reality in a fraction of a second. It provides a way to tell a story or create a question that will resonate with viewers. It can express and project forward events or emotions into the future. That fraction of a second, if thoughtfully captured, can transmit a satisfying recognition to a viewer. It may set the viewer off on an adventure to consider a question.
I enjoy scenes of many types that cause me to respond with a photo. Perhaps that response is recognition of the expression of character, or the essence of an experience which needs to be saved. I try to create an image that may create empathy, appreciation, or humor. The image may cause the viewer to ask questions, or suggest an understanding of a person, place, or time.
Capturing scenes, expressions, or emotions can be done in any media. The images in the portfolios on this site include both film and digital photos. I appreciate color when it adds to an image. I believe light and shadow, texture, and composition are enough to tell many stories. Other times, color can be an important part of the story.
I hope the viewer of these images is able to respond in a way that stimulates recognition. Recognition is understood by the viewer, but in my mind can include familiarity, a sensory response, or emotions captured.
Thanks for taking a look.
